PINEHURST RESIDENCE

The Pinehurst Residence is a 2,000-square-foot custom home in North Seattle, nestled into a densely wooded site. Heavily inspired by our client’s appreciation for contemporary Japanese infill projects, the design prioritizes durable materials, refined detailing, and efficient spatial organization. Operating within a strict 30-foot height limit, our team carefully negotiated the site to accommodate a partially below-grade garage with two upper living levels. The result is a precise, vertically oriented home that maximizes its modest footprint while maintaining a strong connection to its forested Pacific Northwest surroundings.

The exterior is defined by a simple, geometric composition clad in durable silver corrugated metal siding. To break down the scale of the front elevation, the siding’s orientation deliberately shifts between vertical and horizontal profiles. The monolithic form is articulated by strategic carves at points of entry and a prominent balcony projection off the primary suite, which functionally doubles as weather protection for the exterior entry stairs below. Warm wood soffits contrast with the industrial metal, adding a layer of approachability and refined detailing to the facade.

Inside, the floor plan is rigorously organized to maximize space and natural light. On the main level, the living room is distinct yet connected to the kitchen and dining areas, separated by a central custom casework element. This highly functional, multi-sided partition serves as a library with bookshelves for the living space, and houses a pantry and coffee bar for the kitchen. To the rear, the dining and kitchen areas open onto a backyard deck, extending the interior footprint outdoors into the dense tree canopy.

Vertical circulation acts as a central light well for the home. An open-slat wood stair switches back on itself, allowing natural daylight from overhead skylights to cascade down through the core of the house and spill into the lower floors. The upper level hosts three bedrooms, including a primary suite that steps out onto the covered front balcony. By balancing highly efficient programming with moments of spatial expansion and light, the home embodies the ethos of thoughtful, compact living.
